On paper AND in practice: psilocybin mushrooms are a Category 5 narcotic and psilocybin a Category 1 psychotropic — the Thai FDA warned explicitly (Dec 2024, after a tourist death) that they are illegal, with up to 5 years for sale or possession. A 2024–25 ministerial change opens medical research and clinical trials only. The “medical mushroom” shops visible in tourist areas have no legal basis.

No medical framework.

On paper: since 26 June 2025 cannabis flower is a controlled herb — doctor’s prescription (30-day supply, via form PT33), a DTAM-trained staff member required on-site, tourists obtain an in-country prescription on the spot via telemedicine at the shop (no foreign medical-cannabis card is recognized); public smoking fined 2,000–25,000 baht. On the ground: officials put only ~15% of the original ~18,000 shops (roughly 3,000) on track to convert to the new model (April 2026 estimate), and July 2026 field reporting found many Bangkok shops still selling with no prescription check at all, especially in tourist areas. Enforcement is uneven. Further contraction is expected as more licenses expire through 2027. Recreational use was already recriminalized by the June 2025 order. What’s pending is a separate Cannabis Control Act to lock the medical-only regime into primary law (submitted to the minister 20 July 2026; parliamentary review expected no earlier than January 2027), plus a stricter rival bill.

Research door opened 2024–25 for psilocybin (and opiates) — clinical-trial framework only; no recruiting psychedelic trials found yet. Participation is free; screening is strict; never pay for “trial access”.
