Noribogaine: what the evidence shows

Ibogaine's main metabolite, back in US trials for the first time. Your body turns ibogaine into noribogaine. Developers hope it keeps the benefits with fewer risks — that's still a hope, not a finding.

Alcohol use disorder

Early research

First US trial just cleared. No results.

In April 2026 the FDA allowed a Phase 1 study of noribogaine for alcohol use disorder — the first US study of any ibogaine derivative. That's permission to test, not evidence it works.1

Opioid use disorder

Early research

Didn't ease withdrawal in its only trial so far.

In a placebo-controlled safety study in opioid-dependent people, single doses of noribogaine showed only a non-significant trend towards less withdrawal (27 people).2

Safety and who it's not for

In an early safety study in people on opioid substitution therapy, noribogaine prolonged the QT interval in a dose-dependent way.2
